One of the daughters of a Capitol rioter sentenced to more than seven years by a federal judge on Monday said the sentence was “unjust” and that Donald Trump is the one who “deserves life in prison.”
Guy Refitt, who brought a gun to the Capitol riot on January 6 last year and threatened Nancy Pelosi, received one of the longest sentences of any of the rioters so far.
“Trump deserves a life sentence if my father is in prison for that long,” one of Mr. Reffitt’s daughters, Peyton Reffitt, was quoted as saying outside court by CBS News.
She also reportedly gave a statement inside the courtroom telling the court that her father was not a “leader” during the January 6 uprising as prosecutors have charged.
Her stand outside the courthouse was described by Scott MacFarlane of CBS News as “a special, unique moment.”
“I have never heard a defendant or a relative say that Donald Trump should go to jail or prison. This was a special, unique moment from Guy Reffitt’s daughter,” MacFarlane said.
Mr Reffitt – whose full name in court documents was revealed to be Guy Wesley Reffitt – was convicted in March of five charges.
A jury found him guilty of five felony charges in March, including obstructing congressional certification of the 2020 presidential election, carrying a .40 caliber pistol during the riot and two counts of civil disorder.
In the months before and after the 2020 election, Mr Reffitt became involved with the Texas Three Percenters, a loosely organized militia movement, and recruited others to the group to accompany him to Washington on January 6 last year.
As part of his sentence, Judge Dabney L Friedrich ordered him not to contact any members of the Three Percenters or other militia groups while on probation.
“Mr Reffitt’s reluctance to admit early on that his behavior is illegal is worrying. And I want to be very clear…under no legal definition of the term “patriot” does Mr. Reffitt’s behavior on and around January 6th (do) fit. It is the opposite of the word,” Judge Friedrich said.
