The New York Mets acquired outfielder and first baseman Darin Ruf from the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. Andy Martino reports. According to Joel ShermanFour players — center fielder JD Davis, left-hander Thomas Szapucki and prospects Nick Zwack and Carson Seymour — return to the Giants in the deal.

Ruf, who just turned 36, is a right-handed bat with some power who can play left field and first base. This season, he is hitting .216/.328/.373 with 11 home runs and 90 plate appearances. For his career, Ruf owns one OPS+ of 113 and an impressive .929 OPS against left-handed pitching.

In Queens, Roof is likely in line to be the right-handed half of a DH platoon with Dan Vogelbach and also serve as the right fielder. Roof is under contract for $3 million next season and his deal includes a $3.5 million team option/$250,000 buyout for 2024.

On the Giants side, Davis can play the corners in the infield and in recent seasons has played left field. While his offensive numbers are down this season, he is balanced and has been productive during his six-year MLB career. Davis is not eligible for free agency until after the 2024 season. Szapucki, 26, has struggled in very limited exposure at the highest level but has a hit record in the high minors. Zwack, a left-hander, and Seymour, a right-hander, have both played in A-ball this season. Zwack has struggled in High-A St. Lucie, while Seymour looked strong on the same rung.
