House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) landed in Taipei, Taiwan, late Tuesday night local time, defying warnings from the Biden administration and China not to leave.
The trip marks the first time in 25 years that an American official of her level has visited Taiwan. The previous visit was in 1997 by then-Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (GA).
Multiple news organizations in Taiwan and abroad confirmed Pelosi’s landing late Tuesday, sharing images of what appeared to be her plane landing in Taipei.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is landing in Taiwan despite China’s threat of “severe consequences.”

The Biden administration opposed the trip out of fear that it would further destabilize U.S. relations with China at a time when the U.S. is suffering from high commodity prices, supply chain disruptions and is pursuing a green energy agenda that the administration hopes will help. may work with China as midterm elections approach.
Pelosi first planned to make the trip in April, but postponed it after contracting the Chinese coronavirus — a disease that the Taiwanese government tried to alert the World Health Organization (WHO) about in December 2019 but was ignored. She brought a delegation of Democratic lawmakers with her, though she also invited at least one Republican, Rep. Michael McCaul (TX), the ranking member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, who declined to go.
The trip sparked outrage from Beijing, which warned of consequences. Chinese propagandist Hu Xijin threatened that China could shoot down its plane in a tweet, which he later deleted after Twitter locked his account.
Taiwan’s president’s website was reportedly cyber-attacked earlier Tuesday.
Republicans urged Pelosi to make the trip and not give in to Biden or allow Beijing to veto travel by US officials.
Also with her on the trip is Representative Gregory Meeks, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Mark Takano, chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee; Suzan DelBene, vice chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee; Raja Krishnamoorthi, member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. and Andy Kim, a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.
The trip also caps Pelosi’s career as an opponent of the Chinese Communist Party as she nears retirement, but could distract from a string of bad news after her husband Paul Pelosi’s arrest for drunk driving and stock buying of which were ostensibly related to congressional action. .
