The delegation’s visit is significant, as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is the last official of her level to visit Taiwan, in 1997.

Pelosi, in the article, sharp on the Taiwan Relations Act, calling it “one of the most important pillars of US foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific.” The act, he wrote, provided the framework for a relationship “based on shared interests and values: self-determination and self-government, democracy and freedom, human dignity and human rights.”
He also pledged, he wrote, that the U.S. “will consider any attempt to determine Taiwan’s future by other than peaceful means … a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific region and will cause serious concern to the United States.” “
“Today, America must remember that oath. We must stand by Taiwan,” he wrote, calling it an “island of resilience” and pointing to threats from Beijing, which has ratcheted up tensions in a variety of ways – from cyber attacks to economic pressure.
She wrote:
In the face of the accelerating aggression of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), our delegation’s visit to Congress should be seen as a clear statement that America stands with Taiwan, our democratic partner, as it defends itself and its freedom .
Ultimately, Pelosi added that the visit is part of a broader trip focused on shared interests, but made it clear that it is also entirely symbolic of US support for Taiwan in the face of threats from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
“By traveling to Taiwan, we are honoring our commitment to democracy: affirming that the freedoms of Taiwan — and of all democracies — must be respected,” he added.
In a separate statement, Pelosi he said the visit to “in no way contradicts the long-standing policy of the United States, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the US-China joint communiqués, and the Six Assurances.”
