SAN ANTONIO, Texas — City leaders are apparently overwhelmed by the arrival of freed immigrants who later use local transportation hubs to get to other parts of the country. Breitbart Texas reviewed official correspondence and emails regarding a request to limit the number of daily migrant arrivals as local leaders threaten to move them back to the Texas-Mexico border. One federal official is even suggesting Gov. Greg Abbott’s initiative to fly immigrants directly to Washington as an alternative.
A July 27 letter from the city to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the nonprofit shelters in Del Rio and Laredo called for limiting the number of immigrants bused to the local Immigrant Resource Center. The center provides respite for those who do not have a departure window of less than six hours to other parts of the country. Immigrants with a departure time of less than six hours from their arrival in San Antonio are dropped off directly at bus terminals or the international airport.
San Antonio is the latest city to join other metropolitan areas in expressing displeasure over the growing border crisis under the Biden administration. In July, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser formally asked the White House for an unlimited deployment of 150 National Guardsmen per day, plus an “appropriate federal site” for a mass housing and processing center to accommodate busloads of immigrants sent by officials of Texas. .
New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently spoke out about the busloads also arriving from Texas and called for more federal funding to absorb the effects not usually felt until now from the US-Mexico border.
Emails provided to Breitbart Texas show the content and tone of conversations between CBP and a San Antonio city official citing a threat to bus migrants returning to the streets of Del Rio, Texas, if federal authorities do not respect the proposed municipal boundaries. The letter asks that migrants traveling on buses to San Antonio from the border cities of Laredo, Del Rio and Eagle Pass combined be limited to no more than 600 per day.
More than 1,800 immigrants are apprehended daily in the Del Rio and Laredo sectors. While not all immigrants are released into the United States, nearly half travel by bus to San Antonio, according to a CBP source, thanks to the international airport and bus terminals.
The municipal letter notes that the immigrant population at the Immigrant Resource Center is currently double that of 600 residents.
In recent local news reportarea residents met with city officials last Thursday and expressed their displeasure with the center and its residents.
One resident who lived near the shelter associated with a neighborhood association called the center a “cancer,” while another called the site an “eyesore.” One of the attendees at the meeting circulated a petition to force the relocation of the shelter.
According to a source within CBP, the matter was not resolved with the City to their satisfaction. The source says the flow is too great to stop on a practical level. An email from CBP headquarters to the Border Patrol suggests that using state-funded buses set up by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to transport immigrants to Washington, D.C., may be the only alternative. solution to keep up with the daily arrivals from Mexico.
The CBP source, who is not authorized to speak to the media, told Breitbart Texas that the city of San Antonio does not want immigrants to roam freely or in transit hubs for fear of tourism impacts and resident backlash. The source added that if San Antonio authorities followed through on their threat, the migrants would have to be forced back onto southbound buses.
A request for information has not been received from the City of San Antonio as of press time.
