Bungie’s ‘Destiny 2’ Teaser Was Scarier Than Previously Reported

New details continue to emerge about the harassment Bungie employees have suffered from individual Destiny 2 players, which has led to a series of lawsuits aimed at exposing those responsible and holding them accountable.

A new report in The Recorda Canadian news website, has revealed new details about the harassment employees received, which included their home addresses, personal phone numbers and terrifying, racist voicemails.

While the article mentions the previously reported case of a player who threatened to burn down Bungie by moving near its employees, deeming them “unsafe,” there is another, new incident reported here. It made headlines in Canada because Bungie asked a Waterloo-based anonymous texting service, TextNow, to reveal a person who made threats against their employees.

The case in question revolved around an employee who posted tweets featuring well-known black creator Uhmaayyze, a freestyle rapper that Bungie partnered with to showcase its community. The day this tweet went out, the harassment began.

• An anonymous account tweeted out threats to kill Bungie employees.
• Several Bungie employees began receiving voicemails and text messages to their private, unregistered numbers containing racial slurs.
• A voice message from a person calling himself “Brian” asked for the “N-word killing” DLC to be added to Destiny 2 and identified himself as a member of a right-wing social network. These messages were also forwarded to the employee’s wife via text message, who also works for Bungie.
• Another voicemail was left saying “enjoy your pizza” and a pizza was delivered to their unlisted home address. That prompted them to call the local police and file a report, and raised concerns about “swatting,” the practice of calling a SWAT team to someone’s home with a false report once their address is known or further danger from it that particular person.

What’s not clear is what’s happening with this particular case, as although the judge has granted the disclosure request, this isn’t one of the lawsuits Bungie has filed against an individual. It is possible that this will come later, or in this case, turn into something criminal if this information is given to the police.

Bungie is currently on locked radio silent mode when it comes to the vast majority of their employees communicating about the game on social media. Recently, they mentioned that they were trying to find new ways to securely communicate with fans in the future. There’s been a bit of backlash against Bungie’s recent stances on harassment and the lawsuits they’ve filed, with some dismissing it as just “trolling” or “kids pulling pranks,” but as more details emerge about the different forms it’s taken , the more it is clear how serious this is.
