BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s health minister, a trained epidemiologist who has led the country’s fight against COVID-19 since December, has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Health Ministry Karl Lauterbach said early Friday that the 59-year-old has only mild symptoms and is working from home. He said Lauterbach has had four vaccinations and his infection “shows that, with the highly contagious micron variant, an infection cannot be completely ruled out, even with the utmost care.”

Germany, like many other countries, has seen large – though recently reduced – numbers of cases this summer as new micron subvariants drive infections.

The government said on Wednesday that some key restrictions it will remain in place through the coming fall and winter, when experts expect cases of COVID-19 to rise again as people spend more time indoors.
