Having a bike lock is an important part of anyone’s cycling kit. Although not as vital as a helmet, a reliable bike lock provides immense confidence that your bike remains secure wherever you leave it.

And while there’s no bike lock that can deter a well-equipped thief, there are plenty of options designed to slow or deter them.

Having lived and cycled through the gritty cities of Portland, Oregon, and New York, I’ve handled my fair share of locks. And with bike theft on the rise here in New York, I know all too well how important they are. Whether it’s mountain bike tours, e-bike tours, or casual rides around my neighborhood, I’ve tested a variety of locks designed to secure whatever I’m pedaling.

Below are my six favorites, each of which I’ve grown to trust to keep my bike safe whenever I lock it up. Along with the options, I’ve also included information on how I test bike locks at the end of this guide.
