Former local news anchor Kari Lake will win Arizona’s Republican gubernatorial primary, NBC News reported, marking another victory for the pool of candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
Lake will advance to the general election, where she will face Democrat Katie Hobbs, currently Arizona’s secretary of state.
The race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Doug Ducey has gained national attention as Lake, a Trump loyalist who has repeatedly spread false claims that President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory was stolen, emerged in polls as the GOP front-runner.
Government primary mirrors a greater power struggle within the Republican Party between supposedly more traditional conservatives and supporters of Trump’s hard-right populism. These two factions have often diverged over the issue of the 2020 election, which Trump still falsely claims was rigged against him through widespread voter fraud.
Trump had accused Ducey after the governor certified Arizona’s 11 electoral votes in favor of Biden. The Grand Canyon State was one of several key states that were critical to Biden’s victory over Trump in 2020.
Ducey had endorsed another Republican candidate in the primary, Karyn Taylor Robson, for governor. Vice President Mike Pence, who was scorned by Trump and his allies for refusing to throw out key states’ electoral votes for the president on Jan. 6, 2021, has also supported Robson.
Lake led Robson in the latest race polls, according to surveys compiled by RealClearPolitics. But reportedly, the Democrats tried to tarnish Robson’s candidacy in an apparent bet that Lake, like other Republican candidates are perceived as extremistsit will have less chance in general.
