Indiana became the first state to overturn the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade to pass an almost complete ban on abortion.
Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) signed Act 1 into law on the Senate Roll within an hour after both state Republican-controlled chambers approved the bill during a special session on Friday.
The bill passed the House, 62-38, in the afternoon and later in the Senate, 28-19. No Democrats voted in favor of the bill, with some Republicans joining them.
The ban on abortion includes some exceptions, such as rape or incest ten weeks after fertilization, risk to the mother’s life, and if the fetus has a terminal diagnosis. Under these exceptions, the procedure is only allowed up to 20 weeks after fertilization.
If an abortion is to be performed under one of these exceptions, it may only be performed in a hospital or hospital-owned facility, The Associated Press (AP) mentionted. This means that all abortion clinics will lose their licenses, the news agency noted.
If a doctor performs an illegal abortion or fails to properly submit the required reports, he risks losing his medical license.

The legislation will come into effect on September 15.
Indiana’s current abortion law allows the procedure to be performed up to 22 weeks after the mother’s last menstrual cycle, CNN famous.
“After his overthrow RoeI made it clear that I would be willing to support legislation that made progress in protecting life,” Holcomb said in a statement after the legislation is passed. “I am personally very proud of every Hoosier who came forward to courageously share their views in a conversation that is unlikely to stop anytime soon.”
After the House passed the bill, state Rep. Wendy McNamara (R), sponsor of Senate Enrollment Act 1, he said that the legislation “makes Indiana one of the most pro-life states in the nation.”
The White House released a statement Saturday, slamming the legislation as “another radical step by Republican lawmakers to take away women’s reproductive rights and freedom.”
While many states had activated laws that went into effect after the Supreme Court’s decision in late June Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health OrganizationIndiana had not enacted an enabling law and became the first state to pass legislation restricting abortion.
The bill follows after the West Virginia Legislature failed to pass an abortion ban last week, and Kansas voters overwhelmingly rejected a provision that strips abortion protections from the state constitution on Tuesday.
