South Dakota Gov. Christy Noem (R) has a warning for an ESPN host who is seeking to cancel Mount Rushmore because he believes the monument is offensive.
Noem’s words of warning? “Not on my watch.”
On Saturday, the South Dakota Republican posted a message on Twitter warning “wake up the left” that the famous monument in the Black Hills was a tribute to four men who helped make America great and weren’t going anywhere.
“The four men on Mount Rushmore were amazing, flawed American leaders who helped make America what it is today — the greatest country the world has ever known,” Noem wrote. “To the lefties who woke up obsessed with attacking these leaders, I have news for you: not on my watch.”

Noem posted the message in response to ESPN NBA analyst Jalen Rose, who earlier this week called for social justice activists to rally to force an end to the use of the term “Mt. Rushmore’ as a way to define greatness.
“I want to keep challenging myself and challenging you to do something,” Rose said in his Twitter video. “Can we retire using Mount Rushmore?”

Rose wants to see Mount Rushmore canceled like the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians because, as he sees it, all those names are “offensive.”
“The natives, who were the first here before Christopher Columbus,” Rose continued. “Their land was stolen when it was discovered to contain gold.
“And 25 years later – to add insult to injury – four American presidents were placed on what we call Mt Rushmore. On top of the dead that is buried right below,” he added.
“Well, I’m calling on you – and for myself, I’m also on this – let’s stop using the term Mt. Rushmore,” he concluded, “when we’re talking about our favorite rappers, we’re talking about our favorite movies, We’re talking about our favorite us players”.
“I know you’re going to see this video and I know you’re going to take action,” he said.

Governor Noem has been a staunch defender of the landmark located in her home state and has sought to use the monument as a venue for patriotic activities. For example, despite repeated denials from the Biden administration, Noem led the fight to allow fireworks displays at Mount Rushmore on the Fourth of July.
“We will not be able to host these fireworks this year at Mount Rushmore. I’m reporting you [President] Joe Biden and the White House won’t let us go forward with this. The fact is, they are violating federal law by not allowing South Dakota to celebrate our independence at this great monument,” Noem told the Chad Prather Report.
Noem has served as the 33rd governor of South Dakota since 2019.
