The Denver Broncos is Colin Cowherd’s pick to win the AFC West.
Denver probably pulled off the biggest surprise of the offseason when it traded for Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson. Over the last four seasons, he ranked second in the league in passer rating (106.3) and added to a roster with former All-Pros and Pro Bowlers (Justin Simmons and Courtland Sutton) as well as up-and-coming young talent (Jerry Jeudy, Patrick Surtain). II and Javonte Williams), it’s understandable to think the Broncos can win the division — a division that includes the Kansas City Chiefs.
Melvin Gordon on Russell Wilson: “He’s locked in”
The Broncos RB describes Wilson as “all about football” and says he’s locked in and wants the best out of this season. Cowherd and Gordon also discuss expectations for the Broncos and whether they can win the AFC West.
Melvin Gordon is also a two-time Pro Bowler, and appearing on “The Herd” on Friday, Gordon agreed with Cowherd’s assessment of his team’s roster, expressing unwavering faith in Denver’s defense, which ranked third in scoring last season season.
“[We’re] crazy up front, all the way,” Gordon said. “The linebackers are great. The angles are amazing. Pat [Surtain II] he is mad. I honestly think he might be the best corner in the league at some point in a few years, if not this year.
“These kids, I see them every day in practice. Man, these kids are so smart. I see the best.”
Gordon feels just as strongly about the talent on his side of the ball. Gordon and Williams were the only rushing duo to each rush for at least 900 yards last season, and he hopes the team, along with the receiving corps, can help make Wilson’s life a little easier in his first year in the Denver.
“Hopefully we can hit on every cylinder,” Gordon said. “We have the receivers we need to push the ball down the field. We have [Jerry] Jeudy to create separation. We have [Courtland Sutton]the big ball guy, like I said who can stretch the field, along with KJ [Hamler].”
Gordon revealed that Wilson is “locked in already,” telling Cowherd, “He wants the best of everybody.”
Gordon may be saving his best performance of the season for the two games against the division rival Chargers. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Chargers franchise before they let him enter free agency after the 2019 season. Gordon shared that he still “smacks” with several of his former teammates, but looks for revenge when they faces
“This doesn’t change anything [competitively],” Gordon said of the relationships he still has with some of his old teammates. “When we play them, I want to win. I have to score. I have two chances this year.”
While with the Chargers, Gordon played on some talented teams, which included a 12-4 season in 2018. And even though leading receiver Tim Patrick went down with a torn ACL this week, Gordon believes this Broncos roster it might be the best he’s ever been.
“We’ve got a top-class team,” Gordon said. “It’s a shame we lost Tim [Patrick] because it was definitely one of our key pieces. We have some good guys who are going to step up and make some names for themselves.
“I think we’re up there, man. We had a good team with the Chargers, but we run hand in hand, that’s for sure.”
The Broncos are tied for the seventh best odds to win the Super Bowl and have the third best odds to win the AFC West, according to FOX Bet.
