The Chinese military staged a simulated invasion of Taiwan on Saturday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense claimed, as China stepped up its largest-ever military drills across the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese naval and air war drills around Taiwan come after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with the president of the self-governing island, a move China has seen as provocative and a threat to its territorial sovereignty. China has said it wants to reunify Taiwan, which is still recognized as part of greater China under its One China policy, and has called the military exercises a “rehearsal” for a future military operation.

“Multiple PLAs [People’s Liberation Army] vessels spotted around the Taiwan Straits, some have crossed the median line,” Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense he said in a statement, calling the intrusions a “possible simulated attack.” (RELATED: ‘Reunification’ and ‘Re-education’ Coming for Taiwan, Says Chinese Ambassador)

Reuters mentionted.

Saturday’s drills focused on practicing a joint air and sea attack on Taiwan, according to China’s state-run Global Times mentionted. “These missions would pave the way for amphibious landing forces to launch beach assaults if a force reunification operation takes place,” analysts told the Global Times.

Chinese warships also simulated attacks on US and Japanese navies, according to Reuters. The US has expanded the deployment of the USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group to nearby waters to “monitor the situation”.

Chinese military exercises began on Thursday and are scheduled to continue until Sunday.

On Friday, China cut off military communications with the US and suspended cooperation on climate and security issues. US officials confirm Chinese defense officials did not respond to Pentagon calls, Politico mentionted Friday, an act Foreign Minister Antony Blinken called “irresponsible.”

“China chose to overreact and use President Pelosi’s visit as a pretext to increase provocative military activity in and around the Taiwan Strait,” Blinken said. he said at a press conference after a series of meetings with ASEAN partners in Cambodia.

The scale of the ongoing military exercises “far exceeds” those held in 1996, the last time tensions between China and Taiwan peaked, leading experts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies to declare a “Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis”.

An alleged audio leak of Chinese war planners discussing strategy for a May 2022 invasion of Taiwan followed similar PLA exercises billed as a “partial rehearsal” for an invasion of Taiwan, Global Times mentionted, citing sources. The leak was likely intended to intimidate Taiwan and Western countries and was not accompanied by large-scale mobilization, experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry, the Chinese Embassy in the US and Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.
