It’s only a matter of weeks until the 2022 iPhones are released, and the latest rumors are coming thick and fast. Now it looks like we have a look at the colors the new models will be wearing and it’s pretty cool.

August 6 update below. This post was first published on August 4, 2022.

Leaker @Jioriku had a lot to say about what they think will be coming to Apple’s fall phone launch, and included a list of predicted colors. Here is…

For the iPhone 14, there will be six colors at launch. It’s the same number available for the iPhone 13 now. And it is, white, black, green, red, blue and purple.

Update August 6. As you will read below, one of the new colors in which the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are expected to be dressed is purple. This isn’t the first time there’s been a purple iPhone, as both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 came in such a shade (although they were definitely different shades).

But if true, this would definitely be the first time an iPhone Pro would be purple. Since @Jioriku made his claims, several images have surfaced that attempt to show exactly what the new iPhones will look like. While many again look like lilac or purple, one performance stands out. On Twitter, someone called Tech God (@tgod34748) has been deemed to have come up with the most accurate version of the new color, according to @adry_ghincea, who describes himself as follows: “My dream is to be a designer, the my life is a matter of fashion”.

It’s not clear how reliable they are for the final color, but it’s definitely an exciting shade and much deeper and darker than other shades. I like it very much. When questioned about how deep and dark it is, the answer is that it will appear almost black, depending on the light.

I find that a little strange. After all, Apple already has Graphite in the Pro series, which similarly looks almost black in many lights. Will Apple want another iPhone so dark, so dark in fact that it might be hard to tell the two apart in many cases?

Well, probably. Besides, the green and black colors of the Apple Watch Series 7 are both very dark and look black in many lighting situations. Only when the green catches the light just right does its green hue shine through.

In other words, with recent colors like Apple Watch green or with Starlight and Midnight on the Apple Watch, iPhone and MacBook Air, Apple is happy to show us colors that gain extra depth in the right lighting.

There are other renders of what the color will look like, and let’s remember that on the iPhone 14 it will almost certainly be a glossy, glossy finish where the Pro will be matte. This gloss can lead to the iPhone 14 being brighter than the iPhone 14 Pro.

More news as we get it.

Now, back to the original leak.

There are four things to note here.

First, these aren’t the names Apple is definitely going to call them. The current line has no black and white options, instead calling the darkest shade Midnight and the luxurious gold and silver finish with a white back Starlight. Additionally, there is no red in the current range, but rather PRODUCT(RED) indicating that the money is being donated to a worthy cause.

I think PRODUCT(RED) and Midnight will definitely be the color names, and I’d be surprised if Starlight, given its success, isn’t there. Blue and Green would be the names of these shades, I would say.

The second thing to note is that there is a new color here, purple, replacing the current pink, although it seems to have been quite popular (it’s a very cute shade of pastel pink).

But purple is certainly welcome. It’s not the first purple. There was a purple iPhone 11 and a darker version of the same name for the iPhone 12. Both were more lilac than purple to be brutally honest. So maybe 2022 will be the first time there will be a deep, visceral purple. We’ll see.

Third, and this also applies to the Pro colors, none of them will be identical to the current versions. Every year, Apple changes the colors, even if the names stay the same. Even the PRODUCT(RED) is slightly different from year to year and I would expect the same this time.

The current green is beautiful, but it will be different this fall, assuming the leak is correct.

Fourth, note that the iPhone 13 was released in five colors, not six as predicted here. The sixth color, green, was added mid-year. The iPhone 12 came in five colors, but the iPhone 11 appeared in six at launch, so it’s not impossible.

On the iPhone 14 Pro, then.

The new colors, as predicted, will be Green, Silver, Gold, Graphite and Purple. I’m sure Silver, Gold and Graphite will be correct (although Graphite could just have a name revision).

And a new Purple makes sense, although I think it will have a different name and probably a different shade than the iPhone 14.

The green will replace the current Alpine Green.

But I’d just like to point out that there have never been five Pro colors at launch before, it’s always been four since the Pro was introduced in 2019. Alpine Green was added to the lineup just a few months ago. It’s not impossible, but I add the tiniest hint of skepticism here.

Best of all: we’re only a few dozen days away from knowing everything about the next iPhone series.
