The Chicago White Sox held off the Texas Rangers, 2-1, on Friday night, and Sox ace Dylan Chase did the heavy lifting again. Here is his work for the night:
Of Cease’s 91 pitches, 57 went for strikes. In addition to his 12th win of the season against four losses, Cease lowered his 2022 ERA to 1.98. He also has 166 strikeouts in 122 2/3 innings this season. This is obviously excellent, and in his last 13 starts his excellence has been historic:
Indeed, Cease hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in a start since the Red Sox beat him for seven in three innings on May 24. “Unearned” designated pitchers bear some responsibility for those runs allowed. That being said, the record is for treks allowed and Cease actually holds that record.
The 26-year-old right-hander, who was acquired by the Sox from the Crosstown Cubs in 2017, is legitimate. He broke out in 2021 with a 226-strikeout season, and he’s been even better in 2022 — he might even be in line for a high finish on the AL Cy Young ballot. This year, Cease added a splitter to his pitch mix and leaned even more heavily on his wipeout slider. So far, this has yielded big results and could indicate that Cease is ready to take it to the next level and stay there for some time. That’s important for a White Sox team that has been disappointing so far, but is still in the mix in the fairly weak AL Central.
Assuming he remains on regular rest, Cease will look to extend his hitting streak to 14 games against the Royals on Wednesday, August 10.
