Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Democrats’ success in November’s midterm elections will determine whether President Joe Biden runs in 2024.

Host Dana Bash asked: “President Biden says he plans to run for re-election in 2024. You’ve heard that there’s not exactly unanimity in your party. People like chairwoman Carolyn Maloney have said she doesn’t think he’ll run. Rep. Dean Phillips says he doesn’t want to run. Do you think President Biden is the best candidate for 2024?”

Blumenthal said, “I’m going to be very blunt and very honest with you. My focus is completely on this November because I’m running for re-election. But also, I think this November will determine how successful President Biden will be over the next two years and how strong he will be as a candidate. We need to elect more Democratic senators to make sure that he can appoint judges, that he can get pro-choice legislation through, that he can continue the future momentum of the economy, that he can reduce inflation. We are making tremendous progress. The Inflation Reduction Act is an example. The veterans legislation, which I helped lead, is very important.”

Bash asked, “Your non-response will likely be taken as deliberate avoidance. You won’t say, yes, I support President Biden. Is that where you want it to be?’

Blumenthal said: “I will support President Biden.”

Bass said, “Do you want him to run?

Blumenthal said: “If he decides he wants to run, and I think his decision will be determined by how November ends for the Democratic Party and for senators like me who are running for re-election.”
