A rocket fired by Palestinian terrorists into the Gaza Strip on Saturday fell short of its target in Israel and struck a Palestinian home in the Strip, killing several children, Israeli military officials said.

Palestinian media blamed Israel for the attack near a mosque in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, which killed a total of seven people, including four children.

However, Israel Defense Forces officials said that no strike had been carried out in that area and also added that the army’s missile detection system clearly showed that the rocket was launched only to be launched and end up exploding inside the refugee camp.

“On our radar, we see the launch and the impact and we can see that they failed and were hit themselves,” a spokesman said.

A second official said: “We have videos that prove beyond doubt that this is not an Israeli attack. It has been conclusively proven to be a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.”

Israel’s Channel 12 aired a video showing the failed rocket launch.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s spokeswoman, Keren Hajioff, said “the world should be outraged at this terrorist group that is targeting innocent Israelis and killing innocent Gazans.”

“Islamic Jihad is killing Palestinian children in Gaza. One in four rockets fired from Gaza into Israel – lands inside the Gaza Strip,” he noted. “Iran’s proxies – including the PIJ – have a long history of hiding behind civilians to target Israeli civilians.”

“Israel will continue to stand up to this vicious terrorist organization – which threatens Israelis and Palestinians alike,” Hajiov said.

Public diplomacy official Elad Tene said the incident constituted a “double war crime” by Palestinian Islamic Jihad [PIJ] terrorist organisation. “He is shooting civilians and using Gazans as human shields.

“This incident is an example of Islamic Jihad harming the people of Gaza. Any harm to innocent civilians is tragic.”

Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip have fired more than 350 rockets into Israel in 24 hours. About 100 of them have been launched and landed inside the Strip, the IDF said. The Iron Dome missile defense system successfully intercepted 95 percent of the 170 rockets fired at civilian population centers. Rocket sirens rang out in several Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, on Saturday, with Israelis forced to run to bomb shelters.

The flare-up began after the arrest of Bassam al-Sa’adi, PIJ’s leader in the West Bank, whom the terror group sought to avenge by attacking Israeli targets around the Gaza border.

The Israeli air force has carried out numerous strikes in Gaza targeting the Palestinian terrorist group Islamic Jihad as part of Operation Breaking Dawn launched on Friday to counter what Israeli leaders said was a direct tangible threat from the PIJ to Israeli communities.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said the aim of the latest campaign, dubbed Operation Breaking Dawn, was “to eliminate a specific threat”.

“Israel will continue to act without hesitation to ensure the peace of its people,” he told a cabinet meeting on Saturday night.

Earlier in the evening, Israeli media reported that the IDF killed Khalid Mansour, the head of the PIJ’s military wing in the southern Strip.

A day earlier, Israel killed senior PIJ commander Tayseer al-Jabari, the mastermind behind hundreds of rocket attacks during last year’s 11-day war in May.

Major General Oded Basyuk, head of the Directorate of Operations in the Israel Defense Forces, he said reporters on Saturday that “all top Islamic Jihad security officials in [Gaza] Streep has been murdered.”
