A clash between cartel gunmen led to the discovery of at least six bodies and two severed heads along a highway north of the tourist hotspot of Acapulco.

The horrific case took place in the early hours of Friday morning when authorities in the state of Guerrero responded to a farming community in Quechualtenango. The area of the crime scene is just over sixty miles north of Acapulco.

When authorities arrived at that location, they found a truck that had been shot multiple times and set on fire. Near the vehicle, authorities found six bodies and two severed heads.

Guerrero’s Attorney General’s Office confirmed the discovery of the bodies in a prepared statement, saying they would investigate the case.

The horrific crime scene comes at a time when several cells of rival drug cartels continue to battle for control of coastal corridors for transporting drugs into Mexico from Central and South America, control of vast drug cultivation areas in remote rural areas and large scale drug distribution in and around Acapulco.

Despite years of intense violence, Acapulco Mayor Abelina López has tried to minimize violence in her city and has even been publicly ridiculed for claiming that hunger and high heat are responsible for most crimes.
