Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Rumors: Will It Have Better Battery Life?
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 are not the only Samsung devices we expect to see from the company next Unpacked event on August 10. He is also likely his successor Galaxy Watch 4 could be revealed. Rumored to be called the Galaxy Watch 5, the upcoming smartwatch may feature its newest version Wear OS software that Samsung and Google created together.
But if the rumors turn out to be accurate, the Galaxy Watch 5 could face a major drawback: battery life. One of the latest Galaxy Watch 5 leaks also claims to provide a detailed look at the watch’s design.
I also hope to see Samsung commit more fully to Google’s software and services. The Galaxy Watch 4 currently feels caught between the Google and Samsung ecosystems, as my colleague Scott Stein wrote in his criticism. This watch finally received the Google Assistant among other Google services, but it took several months after launch for them to appear.
Samsung hasn’t said a word about plans for its next smartwatch, though the company usually debuts new wearables in August. However, we expect new foldable phones to be announced. In fact, to encourage people to reserve their phones early, from July 19 to August 10, Samsung offers an extensive list of discounts based on different packages, from a maximum discount of $200 for those who book a phone, watch and Galaxy buds to a minimum discount of $30 for just booking Galaxy buds. While this could be a hint of what’s to come Unpacked, the savings may apply to older Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds models.
Here’s our best guess at what Samsung might be planning, based on leaks and the company’s past releases.
August announcement possible
Only Samsung knows when the next Galaxy Watch will arrive. But the company has a history of releasing new wearables in August alongside other new products. For example, the Galaxy Watch 4 made his debut last August, while the Galaxy Watch 3 arrived in August 2020. Samsung has already launched a number of new gadgets in 2022, from Galaxy S22 order to the cheapest Galaxy S21 FEyoung portable computers and tablets. The only thing we haven’t heard about yet are smartwatches, so there’s a chance Samsung is saving that for its usual August Unpacked event.
The Galaxy Watch 5 may come with a faster 10W charger, compared to the 5W charger that shipped with previous Samsung watches. An image of an alleged 10W Galaxy Watch 5 charger appeared on the SnoopyTech Twitter account on August 1 (h/t BGR), and can reportedly reach a 45% charge in 30 minutes.
Faster charging has become a hallmark feature of many smartwatches, including Apple Watch Series 7 and Fossils Gen. 6. This is especially important as watches have also become sleep tracking tools, and earlier this year Samsung debuted one Sleep Animals System to assess sleep quality while wearing the Galaxy Watch 4.
Bigger battery than Galaxy Watch 4
One of the downsides of the Galaxy Watch 4 is its relatively short battery life, which typically lasts between one and two days. There’s a chance that will change with the Galaxy Watch 5. Tech blog Sam Mobile claims to have found a regulatory filing that shows the 40mm size Galaxy Watch 5 will have a slightly larger battery capacity than the Galaxy Watch 4. Samsung declined to comment on the report.
Longer battery life would make the Galaxy Watch 5 a more capable sleep tracker, as you might not need to charge it every night. It would also help Samsung catch up Fitbit in this respect, given that Sense and Reverse 3 The watches can last several days on a single charge. Battery life was one of the biggest downsides of the Galaxy Watch 4 during CNET’s testing, so an improvement would be a welcome change.
It may be able to take your temperature
The Galaxy Watch 4 can already track metrics like your body composition, blood oxygen levels and heart rate. Samsung may advance its health ambitions by adding the ability to measure body temperature to the Galaxy Watch 5, according to a Korean news agency ETNews. The report doesn’t provide many details, other than to say that Samsung has “invented a technology that can measure body temperature as accurately as possible.” Samsung declined to comment on ETNews’ report.
But TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is known for his predictions for Apple products, has disputed this development. He suggested that “algorithmic limitations” could prevent Samsung from bringing this feature to the Galaxy Watch 5.
Temperature sensing is not new to wearables. Of Ura The eponymous wellness ring can measure the temperature from your finger to help you identify changes that may be happening in your body. Fitbit devices like the Sense and Versa 3 can also detect temperature.
If Samsung adds temperature sensing to its next smartwatch, it would be another sign that wearables have become full-fledged health and wellness devices. Measurements such as blood oxygen saturation readings are now relatively common in wearable devices from Apple, Fitbit, Samsung and Garmin.
Samsung may abandon the Classic model
The Galaxy Watch 4 comes in standard and classic versions, but that could change with the Galaxy Watch 5. Instead, Samsung will release the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, according to Sam Mobile. The regular Galaxy Watch 5 will reportedly come in two sizes, while the Pro version may be limited to one size. It’s also unclear whether Samsung will bring the rotating bezel of the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to the Galaxy Watch 5 or 5 Pro, the report said. While the blog didn’t share additional details about what specifically to expect from the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, it’s possible that the new branding indicates a major update that’s more than just a refresh.
Prominent user Evan Blass also suggested that Samsung’s next watch will come in a standard and “pro” model. It referred to the new watches as the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro when it shared what it claims are official renders of the device on the tech blog 91 Cell phones.
Similar design to Galaxy Watch 4
The Galaxy Watch 5 is expected to have a circular design similar to the Galaxy Watch 4, according to leaks from Blass and 91 Cell phones. Blass said the Pro model will be available in black or titanium gray, while Samsung will reportedly offer a wider range of colors for the standard version. The 91Mobiles leak shows the alleged Galaxy Watch 5 Pro in black and titanium gray and the alleged Watch 5 in white, blue and black.
It will likely run Wear OS
Samsung has yet to announce details about its next smartwatch. But since the Galaxy Watch 4 works Wear OS, it seems reasonable for his successor to do so as well. Google and Samsung have partnered to develop the new Wear OS, which means Samsung is likely to commit to using this software for its future smartwatches. Sam Mobile’s report he also said the watch will have a new version of One UI, Samsung’s customized version of Google’s watch software.
Samsung was the first to release a smartwatch running on Google’s new Wear OS. But the landscape will become more competitive soon with the new Wear OS it is expected to arrive with watches from other companies such as TicWatch, Fossil and Google’s Fitbit brand. Google’s Pixel Watch will also arrive this fall.
What we want from the Galaxy Watch 5
Longer battery life and new health tracking features are always appreciated. But what we really want from the Galaxy Watch 5 is software that makes it feel more like part of the Google ecosystem. The Galaxy Watch 4 feels torn between Google and Samsung. Yes, it has the Google Play app store and other Google apps. However, the setup process and health monitoring still rely heavily on Samsung apps.
The company addresses this to some extent by bringing Google Assistant on his watch. But we hope to see closer Google integration in the next version that will really make the Galaxy Watch 5 feel like the ultimate Android smartwatch.
