Erik ten Hag’s reign as Man United manager got off to the worst possible start as his side fell to Graham Potter’s Brighton at Old Trafford.

The home side pulled one back with an own goal from Alexis Mac Allister but were unable to find an all-important equaliser.

Manchester United were out of contention, with their midfield exposed and the fans singled out McTominay, who failed to get out into the middle of the park.

He was lucky to avoid a red card for his reckless tackle on Moises Caicedo, as Ten Haag eventually brought him down in the 77th minute.

Manchester United fans made their feelings known about McTominay’s poor performance on social media.

Speaking after Man United’s 2-1 defeat by Brighton, Roy Keane called out McTominay – claiming he is not “good enough”.

“Fred and McTominay, not good enough,” he told Sky Sports. “They won’t make Man United compete at the top.”

The Red Devils resume the league next Saturday when they take on Brentford.
