6 people shot over brawl at Atlanta baseball game: Police

  • Six people were shot Sunday during a baseball or softball game at an Atlanta park, police said.
  • Authorities said the shooting occurred after an argument broke out during the match.
  • Of the six victims, one died in hospital and another, a 6-year-old boy, is in critical condition.

Six people were shot Sunday afternoon after a fight broke out during a baseball or softball game at a park southwest of downtown Atlanta, police said.

Of the six victims, one was a man in his 30s who died after being taken to Grady Hospital, while another is a 6-year-old boy who is in critical condition at a children’s health care center at Egleston Hospital. Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. told reporters.

The other victims are in stable condition, he added.

Hampton said police have not made any arrests and are asking the public for information about the gunman.

“It may have just been a community event, just for everyone to get together. We don’t know of any connection between the six victims at this time,” he told reporters in a statement.

The shooting occurred at 7 p.m. at the Dunbar Recreation Center in Rosa L. Burney Park, according to police.

“This is not a place for guns, so we’re just asking everyone to leave their guns at home,” Hampton said.

“As we’ve said countless times, we’re just asking citizens to just find a way to resolve conflicts without weapons. We’re just asking people to, you know, walk away,” he also said. “We’re asking people to let bygones be bygones.”

Sunday’s shooting comes after several other gun-related incidents over the past week in Atlanta city parks, including what police believe is a murder-suicide at Merrits Avenue in Central Park and the fatal shooting of a man in Wilson Mills Park.
