Netflix has canceled teen drama First Kill after just one season.
According to Deadline, (opens in new tab) the show, which debuted in the second week of June, wasn’t a bomb with Netflix subscribers, but it didn’t get the numbers it needed to earn a second showing.
In Deadline’s report, a source close to Netflix told the site “the series, which lacked the staying power of most Netflix hits, did not meet the thresholds for airing and completing episodes.”
This comes despite very respectable ratings in the first few weeks. The show garnered 30.3 million hours of viewing in its first three days and 48.8 million hours of viewing in its first full week, numbers that put it behind only Stranger Things and Peaky Blinders.
However, this quick launch did not lead to consistent viewing and the popularity of the show was not sufficient for Netflix to continue.
Based on the short story of the same name by author VE Schwab, First Kill is a reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It follows Juliette Fairmont, a vampire from a long line of vampires who can live in plain sight in Savannah, Georgia.
Approaching her 16th birthday, Juliette, who has spent her life thus far living off blood pills, discovers that the pills are losing their effectiveness and must face the prospect that it’s time to commit her first murder – which she doesn’t wants. to do.
Things are further complicated by the arrival of a new girl in town, Calliope Burns, with whom Juliet quickly falls in love. The problem is, Calliope’s family history is just as complicated as Juliette’s. She is a monster hunter who was raised by a family of monster hunters. And, as with the star-crossed lovers in Shakespeare’s original, there’s an awful lot of drama involved.
Did the critics like the show?
They didn’t hate it, but they didn’t love it either. The show has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 55%, which isn’t anything to go by, but it’s not enough to give the show a certified fresh rating.
Critics who liked it expressed their praise stating that the drama didn’t do anything original with either its vampiric or teen drama influences, with the bad reviews being vociferous for its clumsy writing and general flatness.
In the past, Shakespeare’s modern works have proved rich source material for teen dramas, with 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s The Man and Get Over It all winning a place in the hearts of teen viewers. Their clever versions of The Taming Of The Shrew, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But it’s hard to imagine First Kill having the same longevity.
Analysis: Is Netflix Back To Its Old Bad Ways?
After the bloodbath at the beginning of the year, both in terms of shows being canceled and entire episodes being canceled, the end of First Kill is much better for Netflix execs.
If there was enough appetite for another season of First Kill, production should have started in the fall for a first half 2023 release, and that didn’t happen.
It will now join the likes of The Society, Chambers, Spinning Out, Grand Army, Tiny Pretty Things and Zero Chill in teen dramas that only lasted one season on Netflix.
Netflix has second seasons of Outer Banks, Fate: The Winx Saga, Blood & Water, and Ginny & Georgia coming out in the coming months, so the streamer’s execs still have some commitment to the teen-focused drama. First Kill was just, ah, lacking bite…
