Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt has requested a trade, NFL Network’s James Palmer reported Sunday morning. Palmer added that the team told Hunt it would not grant the request.
Hunt’s trade request comes a month before the regular season and with one year remaining on the 27-year-old’s contract.
He is currently owed a base salary of $1.35 million with $4.9 million in roster bonuses, according to Spotrac.com
Hunt played in just eight games in 2021 due to ankle and calf injuries. He had 386 rushing yards for five touchdowns, adding 22 catches for 174 yards.
A vital part of Cleveland’s formidable duo alongside Nick Chubb, Hunt reported he was 100 percent healthy before training camp. He also expressed a desire to finish his career in Cleveland in June.
Hunt’s yearning for a storybook ending with his hometown team appears to have diminished in light of this latest development, but other players like San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel set the precedent this offseason of turning a trade request into new contract.
If the Browns deny Hunt’s request, that’s one way this impasse could go. Another outcome of course could be Hunt and Cleveland going their separate ways once RB’s contract expires after this season.
Whatever the case, the Browns would benefit greatly from having a fully healthy Hunt on board for this season.
Since joining the Browns, Hunt has spelled Chubb in a torrid fashion — especially during the 2020 season, when he amassed 1,145 yards from scrimmage and 11 scores.
It remains to be seen how the situation will play out — whether the Browns will be able to use their game-breaking ability and whether Hunt will find a trade, contract extension or no change to the status quo.
