The chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that he believed Republicans would win in the November midterm elections, but acknowledged that it would be “difficult » to regain the Senate.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Let me talk to you about the politics of it all. Republicans hoped to ride record high inflation and President Biden’s low approval ratings to victory in November. But the President and the Democrats have had a very good run here. Gas prices are falling. You have this huge expense account. That’s a lot of big wins for Democrats. The President just authorized this strike to take out the leader of Al Qaeda. Isn’t that going to make it harder for Republicans to get the advantage you’re trying to build here?

SCOTT: So, you know, that sounds good, right? But these are – these are the White House talking points. But think about it, 72% of Americans think we’re headed down the wrong road. Biden’s numbers are in the tank. And if you look at all the Democrats — all the Democrats who are running, and they should — it’s basically a stand-in for Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer. I mean, they’ve got to defend inflation, high gas prices, you know, Afghanistan withdrawal, open borders, critical race theory, police pay, that’s got to be defended because that’s – that -, that’s what biden is known for and that’s basically what the democrats are known for. Now, it would appear that it is an election year. It’s going to be a tough year. We have 21 Republicans up, only 14 Democrats. The Democrats are outnumbering us, but we have good candidates. And, I think Joe Biden is going to be our key here.

BRENNAN: You said it’s going to be a tough year. I want to play for you what Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Fox last week.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL: I think it will be very tight – we have 50/50 shots and now we have 50/50 nation. And I think when the smoke of the Senate race clears, we’re likely to have a very, very close Senate again, either us up a little bit or the Democrats a little bit up.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRENNAN: If things are so bad, then why is it going to be so tight for Republicans?

SCOTT: Well, first of all, we have – we have very good candidates. I mean the Democrats raise good money. So we have to be able to get our message out, so you know, we have to raise our money. We have to work hard, you know, we’ve been through a lot of qualifiers, so- but I think we’re going to, I think we’re going to win but it’s going to be- it’s going to be tough. We have to raise your money, we have to work very hard for the candidates – we have to work very hard. Everyone will help our candidates, but I am optimistic.

BRENNAN: To agree, it’s going to be narrow that the Republicans have at best a small advantage.

SCOTT: I’m very optimistic. I’d like to- but I’m- I’m a realist you know, you’ve got to get your money together. Democrats. they raise good money. Joe Biden is our key here. And by the way, this bill is not going to help the Democrats. It will help the Republicans. $700 billion tax increase, $280 billion Medicare cut, gas tax increase, I have 87,000 more IRS agents. Do you know how happy people are to have more IRS agents out there? I mean, that’s not – that’s not going to be popular across the country.
