Beijing — Police in southern China have arrested a 47-year-old man who is a suspect attack that killed three people and injured six others in a kindergarten in Jiangxi province.

Liu Xiaohui was arrested at 10.50pm on Wednesday, about 12 hours after the morning attack, Anfu County police said in a statement. He had run away and gone into hiding, the statement said.

Police did not release any information about the victims’ identities or ages.

China’s Global Times newspaper reported that at least one victim was a child and that the attacker was believed to be armed with a knife.

When police first reported the attack, they said a “gangster wearing a cap and mask” carried out the attack at a private kindergarten, Agence France-Presse reported.

China has beefed up security at schools after a spate of deadly attacks in recent years largely attributed to people with a grudge against society or mental illness.

China does not allow private gun ownership, so most such attacks are carried out with knives, improvised explosive devices or petrol bombs.

About 100 children and adults have been killed and hundreds injured in the past decade in apparently uncoordinated “lone wolf” attacks, in which the motives were unclear. The mostly male perpetrators were either killed, committed suicide or were tried and executed.

Acts of violence against China’s youth are particularly resonant because of the country’s chronically low birthrate, in part due to decades of population control policies.
