One of Auburn’s potential starting quarterbacks has found himself in some legal trouble as the preseason begins. TJ Finley, a junior who started the final three games of the 2021 season, was arrested Thursday and charged with attempting to elude police.

The source of Finley’s arrest stems from a prior traffic violation in which he was cited for not wearing a helmet while operating a moped, a Class A misdemeanor. according to AL.com. Finley turned himself into Auburn police after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest. He was booked into the Lee County Detention Center but has since been released after posting bond.

The school is aware of Finley’s arrest, but has not commented at this time. Coach Bryan Harsin is scheduled to speak at a pre-camp press conference Thursday afternoon.

Finley completed 70 of 128 passes (54.7%) for 827 yards, six touchdowns and one interception as a sophomore. That included 97 yards passing and a touchdown in a comeback win over Georgia State, along with a 137-yard, two-touchdown performance in a quadruple-overtime loss to Alabama to close out a 6-6 regular season. Transferred to Auburn from LSU before the 2021 season. Started five games at LSU, threw for 941 yards, threw five touchdowns and was sacked five times.

The 6-foot-7, 250-pounder from Ponzatoula, Louisiana, is locked in a three-way battle with former Texas A&M standout Zach Calzada and former Oregon backup Robbie Ashford. Harsin told CBS Sports last month that he’s not opposed to playing two quarterbacks this year.
