A total of 91 percent of French people are behind the expulsion of radical Islamist imams who give sermons and speeches that are against France’s democratic values.

The figures come from a poll released this week by the CSA institute, in which 91 percent of respondents agreed that foreign imams who preach and give speeches contrary to the values of the French Republic should be expelled from the country.

Among those over 65, 98 percent agreed with the expulsion of radical imams, while the number dropped to just 72 percent among those aged between 18 and 25.

Politically, supporters of the far-left France Insoumise party were less supportive of expelling radical imams, but a majority, 71 percent, still approved of the idea. On the right, supporters of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) were almost unanimously in favor of deportations, while supporters of the centre-right Les Republicains supported the idea 100%.

The poll comes as radical preacher Imam Hassan Iquioussen is set to be deported from France over speeches deemed incompatible with French values, with Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announcing his expulsion last week, CNews References.

Iquioussen, who is of Moroccan heritage, attempted to appeal the deportation order to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), but his case had been dismissed by the European Court of Justice on Thursday.

During his sermons, Iquioussen is accused of preaching hatred, particularly against members of the Jewish community, with Minister Darmanin accusing him of “openly anti-Semitic comments, openly xenophobic, openly homophobic, openly anti-women”.

While Iquioussen was born in France, Minister Darmanin said he did not apply for French citizenship.

The case comes as another radical imam in Sweden faces hate crime charges for speeches that also targeted the Jewish community in the past two years.

Imam Bassem Mahmoud is said to have claimed that Jews rule the West and called Muslims who collude with Jews “traitors”. He faces trial next month in the city of Malmö.
