The Madison County School District in North Carolina has placed an AR-15 in a safe in every school in the county so that the weapons are accessible for classroom defense in the event of an attack.

The Citizen Times notes that Madison County schools will also have breaching tools and extra magazines of ammunition for the rifles.

The county’s decision was framed in response to the May 24 attack in Uvalde, Texas.

USA Today mentionted that Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood pushed for AR-15s after the attack, pointing out that he didn’t want bad people to be able to walk into a school and drill into a classroom with officers unable to act.

Harwood said, “I hope we never need it, but I want my kids to be as prepared as they can be.”

“We were able to put an AR-15 rifle and safe in all of our schools in the county. We also have hacking tools to get into these safes. We have extra magazines of ammunition in these safes,” Harwood explained.

“If we have someone stuck in a door, we won’t have to wait at the fire station. We will have these tools to be able to breach this door if necessary. I don’t want to have to run back to the car to get an AR, because that’s wasted time.”
