Sky Sports ‘ignored Premier League rules’ in half-time interview Patrick Vieira Friday night.
Vieira’s Crystal Palace side were beaten 2-0 by former club Arsenal in their opening game of the season at Selhurst Park.
Gabriel Martinelli put Arsenal ahead on 20 minutes before Mark Gwehi’s own goal sealed victory five minutes from time.
But Vieira made history by giving the Premier League’s first half-time interview as part of a new shake-up in top-flight coverage.
Having agreed to the short interview, the Frenchman answered a few questions and emphasized the need for a quick start in the second half.
“I think so [we] I’m a bit disappointed it’s 1-0 down at half-time,” he told Sky Sports as the teams took to the pitch.
“We did a great job finishing the first half, so it’s important to start the second half just as strong.”
The proposals were made in April and received a “warm welcome” from the media department at clubs, who eventually voted in favor at the annual general meeting in June.
According The Athlete, in section K of the Premier League rules, states: “In relation to any league match broadcast live by a UK broadcaster, the UK broadcaster may request the manager (or a senior member of the coaching staff) of one or each participating club provides an interview at the end of half-time, before the restart of the league match.
“The director may choose to grant the requested interview or decline to do so, in his sole discretion.”

Last season I remember hearing they were planning to do half-time interviews and we just had our first one with Patrick Vieira. Patrick was very calm, but I can imagine you’ll find some coaches who will be very nervous about having to talk on TV at half-time. Klopp will hate it.

However, it was initially announced that those taking part in the half-time interviews would be the managers of the winning teams, which was not the case with Vieira as his side were behind.
Half-time interviews could prove fascinating, giving fans regular breakdowns of the first half from a coach’s side and their take on big incidents.
One change that viewers didn’t like was the new scoreboard on Sky Sports. Instead of the three letter acronym for each team, the top left corner of the screen featured both peaks and it didn’t go over well.
