For the second season in a row, Arsenal begin their return to the Premier League but will be hoping things go a little better than their defeat to Brentford last season. There is fair reason to expect improvement after the addition of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mikel Arteta is doing his best to bring Manchester City’s environment to the Emirates Stadium.

For Patrick Vieria, he would like nothing more than for Crystal Palace to take the next step in their development by upsetting Arsenal to open the season. They have made smart additions in the transfer window and one of the beautiful things at the start of the season is that all the teams are evenly matched. Even without Michael Olise and with Conor Gallagher back at Chelsea, Crystal Palace will put up a big fight protecting their home turf.

Stories

Crystal Palace: Thanks to the tours to Australia and Singapore, Crystal Palace faced the unique challenge of having to have split squads during the pre-season, which didn’t give Vieira the best opportunity to work with all the players. Some of the players did not qualify for each country but they are all together now as he also looks to integrate new signing Chris Richards into his side. Most of the squad will be available but Michael Olise, Sam Johnstone, Jack Butland and James McArthur will not be available for the match.

Arsenal: Arteta has almost a clean bill of health. Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu will all miss the match, but with the new system seeing Ben White at right-back to allow the attack to stay further forward. He gives Arsenal plenty to go forward in support of Jesus, while also balancing the defense when Oleksander Zinchenko goes forays into the wing.

Prophecy

Although the pre-season has been strong for Arsenal, Patrick Vieira knows how to get draws in any situation. Choose: Crystal Palace 2, Arsenal 2
