Friday on CNN’s “New Day,” Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) discussed his loss in the GOP primary to John Gibbs who was endorsed by Trump earlier this week after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC ) promoted his opponent.
Meijer, who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump, said he wasn’t going to “whine” about the DCCC’s “interference” but told Democrats not to “expect to be able to maintain this sense of self-righteousness and of sanctity. after endorsing a Trump-backed candidate.
“I’ll be honest — it’s impossible to know,” Meijer said when asked if the DCCC made a difference in the close race. “I can stay back all day on Monday morning. I’m not here to whine about the DCCC coming in and meddling, but just to point out that any party that pretends to have a set of principles, any party that pretends to have a set of values and that comes in and boosts exactly the same type of candidate that claim to be … a threat to democracy, don’t expect to be able to maintain that sense of self-righteousness and sanctity. Don’t expect to have Republicans looking at this and saying, “You know, I know I’m going to take heat from my side.”
“I never expected the other side to double down on a cynical ploy to nominate the candidate they think is the least electable,” he continued. “I think the challenge right now, and this is not why I want to complain about my own defeat, I lost, that’s mine, but is to say what kind of system are we going to have if the candidates step forward and realize that they can just to be spewed from both sides of the aisle, that there is no incentive to try to be a productive member, that you will never find any sense of comfort or security in doing the work, that everything will become partisan gain regardless of the consequences.”
