A Brazilian man was hospitalized after performing a nose job on himself, prompting YouTube to remove a DIY rhinoplasty tutorial, according to a report.
The man, who has not been named, attended the Campo Limpo Emergency Care Unit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on July 21, the municipal health department told Insider.
Following the ER visit following the DIY rhinoplasty procedure, the patient was seen by an on-site mental health team before being referred to an oral and maxillofacial team, the department said.
“The team cleaned and bandaged the wound and provided instructions for the necessary care,” the health department said in an email.
He was discharged from the hospital the same day.
The man was referred to an oral and maxillofacial specialist team and a psychological service for long-term care.
Brazilian media outlet G1 reported that the patient watched YouTube tutorials on how to perform a rhinoplasty at home, thereby duplicating the procedure that should only be performed by trained health professionals.
The municipal health department told Insider it has no information on this. YouTube did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.
However, G1 reported that YouTube removed an instructional video about DIY nose jobs shortly after the hospitalization was made public. G1 also said YouTube has since implemented age restrictions on videos showing viewers how to perform less invasive nose jobs on themselves.
According to doctors interviewed by G1, performing a nose job on yourself can lead to serious complications, including necrosis, infections, nasal obstruction and anaphylactic shock.
